The Community Conservatory of Doylestown is proud to announce a course in the F.M. Alexander Technique. Alexander Technique is a proven method to help performing artists in all disciplines improve their coordination by developing awareness of the psychophysical body in action. This will be an 9 lesson course given by Michael Strauss, who trained for twelve years in Lincoln, Nebraska with Marjorie Barstow, who had learned the technique personally from Frederick Mathias Alexander in London beginning in 1920.
This will be a group class limited to twenty students, ages 14 to adult. Each lesson begins with a brief lecture, followed by group activities, and culminating with a master class, in which individual students present guided performances for the entire class. Bring your instrument, your song, your monologue, your questions. Otherwise, no previous experience is necessary.
The essence of Alexander Technique is that most of us most of the time are unaware of our habits in action; because we do not know what we’re doing with ourselves at the critical moment of action, we not only fail to reach our potential but often strain ourselves, unconsciously and unintentionally. Of course, as we learn to leave ourselves alone, the pain from damaged tissues is allowed to heal. As part of the process, we also learn to connect to our audience with perfect freedom. No matter what your problem, and what your level of achievement, this course in Alexander Technique will help you perform better, look better, and feel better.
This work is especially valuable to teachers seeking new ways to help their students overcome unconscious resistances.
Alexander Technique is taught at conservatories, dance studios and drama schools all over the world. Some of its most famous practitioners have been George Bernard Shaw, Paul Newman, Dr. Niko Tinbergern, Christopher Reeve, and anyone who had ever attended the Drama School at the Juilliard School. Now, you can discover it for yourself at the Community Conservatory of Doylestown.
